NEW YORK – July 15, 2026 – Today, Spencer Striker Digital Learning released the first episode of, Al-Khwarizmi: Father of Algebra and the Algorithm | An Original Docudrama Series. This free series of 30 episodes was funded by the Doha Film Institute Web Series Grant and selected for the Qumra 2026 Series Lab and is available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@SpencerStrikerDigitalLearning.
Published first in English in a vertical format for mobile devices, the story follows Al-Khwarizmi in ninth-century Baghdad, which was considered the Silicon Valley of its time. A scholar at the House of Wisdom, a young and hungry Al-Khwarizmi fused Greek geometry and Indian arithmetic into something new: the algorithm. Eventually, this became Algebra, the foundational advanced mathematics taught to middle-school age students around the globe.
Season 1 released on YouTube on July 15 with the remainder of the 30-episode series releasing periodically throughout Summer 2026. The series is completely free for anyone to use and enjoy. Teachers are encouraged to watch Al-Khwarizmi with their students in mathematics, social studies, or world history. Teachers of the digital arts and filmmaking including AI animation/graphics and AI filmmaking in high school and college, can learn from the film production notes supplied here. And, anyone interested in the history of the House of Wisdom, the foundations of mathematics, or the rich cultural history of the Middle East will enjoy the Legend of Al-Khwarizmi.
The docudrama series creator is Spencer Striker, PhD, a Professor of Digital Media Design at Northwestern University in Qatar and the founder of Spencer Striker Digital Learning. His award winning work spans interactive history, mobile games, VR, and documentaries. See his full portfolio at SpencerStriker.com.
“Producing the Legend of Al-Khwarizmi is the culmination of deep research into the cultural and intellectual history of ancient Persia, combined with the prodigious talents of our creative team,” said Striker. “We are working at an exciting time, when AI film production in the hands of talented artists can create rich and beautiful work at a fraction of the cost and time of traditional filmmaking. Small, indie teams like ours can now produce original material with high production value relatively quickly and share the work with millions of people – and in our case, entirely for free.”

Al-Khwarizmi: Father of Algebra and the Algorithm | An Original Docudrama Series
Synopsis
Legacy of Light: House of Wisdom is a stylized AI-animated biopic that redefines the origin story of the digital age. It follows al-Khwarizmi from Central Asian outsider to the intellectual heart of ninth-century Baghdad, the Silicon Valley of its time. In a high-stakes arena where innovation is currency, translators race to preserve Greek and Persian knowledge, patrons fund research, and scholars jockey for position. A hungry young outsider from the provinces must prove himself, and he does, fusing Greek geometry and Indian arithmetic into something entirely new. Algebra is born, written in words: step-by-step instructions for solving the unsolvable.
The story spans 55 years of a legendary life, from ambitious young scholar to revered master, then follows his ideas as they escape Baghdad, carried by traders along the Silk Road and translated by monks in candlelit European scriptoriums. It closes in the present day, where his invention runs everything: navigation, medicine, finance, computing, and artificial intelligence.
The Recursive Thesis
The production method is inseparable from the story's meaning: we are using generative AI to tell the story of the man who made generative AI possible. That recursion is the thesis of the project, and the timing gives it urgency. The world is living through an AI revolution, and the concept at its foundation traces directly back to one scholar in the House of Wisdom.
The title also plays against the "Dark Ages" trope. While Europe dimmed, Baghdad was blazing with intellectual fire, and the series is built around that image: light piercing shadow, knowledge piercing ignorance.
A New Aesthetic: Poetic Noir Realism
The series pioneers a signature visual language we call Poetic Noir Realism: baroque chiaroscuro lighting, painterly texture, and the introspective elegance of Middle Eastern storytelling. Oil lamps flicker against sandstone, shadows stretch long across the Round City, and breakthroughs arrive in pools of golden light. The look is cinematic and sculpted, built to avoid the sterile feel of clean CGI.
Behind it sits a production pipeline that represents a genuine phase shift in animation. The team orchestrates tools including Midjourney, Kling, and Nano Banana through advanced workflows: natural-language image editing, frame-matched shot extensions, and sync-sound dialogue with photorealistic characters capable of human micro-expressions. The result is sustained, evidence-based visual narrative of a kind that simply was not possible until now.
Format and Status
- Format: Animated historical docudrama blending cinematic AI-animated dramatization with narrator and historian voices, in the format family of Netflix's Rise of Empires: Ottoman and Roman Empire.
- Season 1: Complete. Produced in a mobile-first vertical edition, with a widescreen edition in finishing.
- Languages: English, with an Arabic dub underway.
- Series plan: A six-episode season arc, with each episode spotlighting a different scholar of the Islamic Golden Age, connected by the House of Wisdom and the transmission of knowledge along the Silk Road.
- Production: History Adventures, LLC. Produced in Qatar and the USA.
Why It Travels
The algorithm is universal: everyone who touches a phone is a beneficiary of al-Khwarizmi's invention. The story bridges the Islamic Golden Age and the modern tech revolution, and it sits at the intersection of three powerful currents: the global appetite for historical prestige content, the rise of MENA stories on the world stage, and the fascination with AI as both subject and production tool. Primary audiences are young adults and adults interested in history, science, and technology, with particular resonance across the MENA region and strong secondary value for educators and cultural institutions.
