Winning Teachers Share Tips for Preparing for World Math Day on March 25

10 million students have answered over 1 billion questions in this free, fun event sponsored by Mathletics.

NEW YORK - March 12, 2026 - World Math Day, the world’s largest online mathematics competition, kicks off on March 25 in Australia and March 24 in the U.S. Teachers have already begun registering their students for this fun, free international celebration of math.

We asked teachers how to best prepare.

World Math Day 2025 Grade 3 level winning class in Canada, Jane Robertson, of Regina Christian School in Regina, Saskatchewan offered this advice:

“Your students will do better if they have had more time to do Live Mathletics but no matter the level or experience of your students, they will enjoy the experience. I have always done Math dress up and I have had students (families) go all out but also I have lots of kids just wear their numbered sports jerseys. I also encourage students to bring "a Math snack to share" and we get anything from pretzel sticks (tens from the base ten blocks) to cupcakes iced with math symbols and lots of other creative ideas. It becomes a very memorable day.

Ms. Robertson reminded teachers to pay attention to time zones. Since this is a global competition, the contest is live a day early which can be confusing.

“I tell my students that they can prepare right up until a very specific date and time [based on when the school is scheduled to compete]. They have to wait until the school’s competition time slot to begin competing.”

Kelly Branson at Toll Gate Elementary School in Pickerington, Ohio had two winning students in 2025 WMD:

“My biggest advice is to build excitement early and make it a school-wide experience if possible. We created a bulletin board with a world map to track the countries students practiced against during the warm-up period, which sparked a lot of curiosity and motivation. I also recommend collaborating with technology teachers—they helped prepare and upload rosters and taught students how to log in and play during tech class, which made the process seamless. This allowed homeroom teachers to simply provide time on the day of the competition.”

One year, World Math Day occurred during Toll Gate’s Spring Break. Being at home or home schooled doesn’t preclude students from participating, though. Ms. Branson added:

“I encouraged students to participate from home because of how powerful the experience is. The most rewarding part is seeing students genuinely excited about math—celebrating level-ups, improving scores, and even setting goals to “beat” other countries. When students can’t wait to come to school to share what level they reached, how many problems they solved in a minute, or who they competed against, it’s clear that World Math Day creates an unmatched level of excitement, motivation, and joy around mathematics.”

The mission of World Math Day is to get kids excited about mathematics and see it as inspiring and enjoyable, rather than overwhelming or boring. In the United States, it is particularly important that we bring fun back into learning mathematics to get students back on a growth trend of improved performance. World Math Day officially kicks off at 6:00 a.m. local time on March 25 in Australia and runs for 48 hours at various times around the globe. Starting on March 12, teachers and their students who have pre-registered will have free access to the Mathletics platform so they can practice with the question format and hone their math fluency skills.

During the 48-hour competition students complete twenty 60-second Live Math Challenges, the goal being to get as many of those questions as possible correct. There are questions for many different abilities. <<Teachers simply register their class and then put students into the appropriate category for their skill level.>> Prizes are given based on individual and school ranking and participants can track their progress on a Live Leaderboard.

The 2026 theme is United by Numbers, which celebrates the belief that everyone can learn and excel at mathematics when given the right support. Teachers and students need not be Mathletics users to participate since access to Mathletics is provided free to all registrants starting March 12.
